Cancer

Cancer is, to put it simply, the growth of abnormal cells. When the body functions normally, it regulates cell growth, manufacturing new cells to replace dead and dying ones, and then sending a clear signal to stop when enough cells have been produced. In cancerous cells, the stop switch malfunctions, and the cells continue to replicate. As these abnormal cells multiply, they form masses of cells called tumors.

There are many theories about the causes of cancer, yet cancer continues to elude medical cures. The range is enormous and includes tobacco; diet/weight/physical inactivity; alcoholic drinks; ultraviolet radiation; viruses and bacteria; ionizing radiation; pesticides; medical drugs; solvents; fibers, fine particles, and dust; dioxins; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); metals; diesel exhaust particles; toxins from fungi; vinyl chloride; and benzidine.
